Why Tirupati needs a plan, not a one-day dash
Tirupati is roughly 380–415 km from Vijayawada by road, depending on the route and the source you check, and the drive takes about six to seven and a half hours without long stops. Going up the hill and queueing for darshan then adds many more hours. A same-day return is therefore tiring and risky: you would be driving close to 800 km and spending most of the day in a temple queue in between.
Most families are better served by an overnight plan, which is what the options below assume. They are suggested itineraries to help you plan, not fixed Best Car Travels packages. If you want a package fare, ask for one for your exact dates.
Route and departure timing
The usual road is NH16 towards Ongole and Nellore, then onwards to Tirupati. Plan your departure around when you want to arrive, not just when you want to leave:
- Early-morning departure (around 4–5 am): reaches Tirupati in the afternoon, leaving time to check in and rest before darshan the next morning.
- Evening or night departure: arrives early the next morning, which can suit a same-morning darshan slot, but the driver and passengers will have travelled overnight. Plan for sleep and for driver rest.
Whichever you pick, add buffer. If your darshan slot is fixed, aim to reach Tirupati the evening before.
Itinerary options to consider
Option A: two days, one night (focused darshan trip)
- Day 1Leave Vijayawada early, reach Tirupati by afternoon, check in and rest. In the evening, visit a nearby temple at an easy pace.
- Day 2Go up for darshan at the time of your slot, then begin the return in the afternoon or evening. Be honest about how tired the group will be; many travellers choose to stay a second night.
Option B: three days, two nights (relaxed pace)
- Day 1Drive to Tirupati and rest.
- Day 2Darshan at Tirumala, with the rest of the day free.
- Day 3Local temples in the morning, then the drive back to Vijayawada.
Option C: add nearby temples
Travellers often add Sri Padmavathi Ammavari Temple at Tiruchanoor, close to Tirupati, and Srikalahasti, roughly 35–40 km away. Ask for these in your quote so the extra driving is included and the timings work around your darshan slot.
Darshan arrangements and advance booking
Darshan at Tirumala is managed by Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), not by the taxi operator. Some darshan options require advance online booking and slots can sell out, while others involve queueing on the day. TTD publishes the booking process, dress guidelines and security rules on its official website, tirupatibalaji.ap.gov.in, and these rules change from time to time.
A taxi booking does not include or guarantee darshan, a particular slot or any temple access. Arrange darshan tickets yourself through official channels, and plan travel around the slot you actually hold.
Ask your operator how the vehicle will be handled at Tirumala, including parking and whether and where it can wait while you are in the queue. Arrangements on the hill are governed by TTD and local authorities and can change.
Vehicle choices for families and groups
- Sedan: comfortable for up to four people, but luggage space is limited on a multi-day trip.
- SUV or MPV (Innova, Ertiga): a common choice for families of five to seven, with more legroom for a long drive and an easier time for older relatives getting in and out.
- Tempo traveller: suits extended families and groups. Confirm the exact seat count and luggage arrangement.

Return-trip planning
Pilgrimage days often run longer than expected, so avoid committing to a tight departure from Tirupati. Decide in advance whether you will start back the same evening or sleep and leave in the morning, and tell your operator, because the driver’s rest and any waiting charges depend on it. If you take a round trip, ask how waiting time and an extra night are charged.
What to confirm in your quote
- Whether toll, parking and driver allowance are included
- Charges for waiting time during darshan, and for an extra day if plans change
- Whether the Tirupati area temples you want are covered by the quoted kilometres
- Who arranges accommodation. This is normally booked separately by you

Frequently asked questions
How long is the drive from Vijayawada to Tirupati?
Around 380–415 km and roughly six to seven and a half hours, according to public route sources. Plan for more with meal and rest stops.
Can we go and return in one day?
It is technically possible but not recommended. You would drive close to 800 km and spend the middle of the day in a darshan queue. An overnight stay is much safer and more comfortable.
Does the taxi booking include darshan tickets?
No. Darshan is arranged through TTD’s official channels. A taxi booking only covers the vehicle and driver as described in your quote.
What should we pack?
Follow TTD’s published dress and security guidelines, keep ID and darshan confirmations handy, and carry basic medicines and snacks for the journey.
Is a fixed Tirupati package available right now?
Availability depends on your dates and the vehicle you need. Request a fare with your travel date and we will confirm what can be offered.
