What makes Srisailam different
Srisailam is home to the Mallikarjuna Swamy temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, together with the Bhramaramba Devi shrine, which is counted among the Shakti Peethas. Both sit in the Nallamala hills on the Krishna river, close to the Srisailam dam. Many travellers also visit nearby viewpoints and the Pathala Ganga area.
The trip is unusual because the approach roads pass through forest, which affects how you should schedule the day. The itineraries below are suggestions for planning, not fixed packages. If you would like a package quote, ask with your exact dates.
Route options and journey time
From Vijayawada the road distance is commonly quoted at roughly 255–275 km, with a drive of about 5.5 to 7 hours. Figures vary between sources because there is more than one approach. Srisailam can be reached by road from the Dornala side (typically via Guntur and Markapur) or from the Atchampet side, and your driver will choose based on road conditions and your pickup point.
Plan for the slower end of the estimate. Forest roads with bends and slopes are rarely fast, and temple-day traffic can slow the final stretch.
Forest roads and night travel
The forest sections near Srisailam have had restrictions on night-time vehicle movement. A window of roughly 9 pm to 6 am has been commonly reported, but rules can change. Ask your operator to confirm the current position and plan your arrival and return around it.
In practice this means you should not plan to drive the forest section late at night, either on the way there or on the way back. It is one more reason to leave Vijayawada early and to avoid scheduling a late-evening return.
Suggested plans
Option A: one long day
- Early morningLeave Vijayawada around 4–5 am so that you reach Srisailam in the late morning.
- MiddayTemple visit. Queue time varies hugely between ordinary days and festival or weekend days.
- AfternoonShort sightseeing if energy allows, then start back early enough to clear the forest section before dark.
This works only if the group is comfortable with a long day and queues are manageable. It leaves little margin.
Option B: overnight stay (more comfortable)
- Day 1Drive in the morning, check in, rest, and visit the temples in the evening if timings allow.
- Day 2Early darshan, a few nearby viewpoints, then return in daylight.
For families with children or older members, an overnight stay avoids rushing and keeps both journeys in daylight. Accommodation is usually booked separately; the temple devasthanam and private lodges both operate in Srisailam, so book ahead, especially for weekends and festivals.
Preparing for the temple visit
- Check the devasthanam’s current information for darshan timings, ticket types, dress code and rules on phones and cameras. These change.
- Expect queues on weekends, holidays and festival days, including Maha Shivaratri.
- Carry water, light snacks and footwear you can remove easily.
- Keep ID with you in case it is needed for tickets or lodging.
A taxi booking does not include darshan or entry tickets. Please arrange these yourself through the temple’s official channels.
Vehicle options for families and groups
On a route with bends and slopes, comfort and a driver used to hill and forest roads matter more than speed. A sedan works well for up to four people. SUVs and MPVs such as Ertiga and Innova give five to seven people more room for a longer ride, and a tempo traveller suits bigger family groups. Confirm availability for your date, and read our vehicle comparison guide if you are undecided.
Return-trip arrangements
Decide before you leave how you will handle the return. If you want the same car to wait during your temple visit and bring you back the same day, agree this at booking, including how waiting time is handled. If you plan to stay overnight, tell us, because the driver’s rest and an additional day may be charged differently. Our guide to one-way versus round-trip bookings explains the terms to look for.
