The headline sights inside Vijayawada
The Krishna district tourism website lists most of the places visitors ask about. Together they cover temples, a river barrage, caves, a hill memorial and a museum, and most sit within a short drive of each other.
| Place | What to know |
|---|---|
| Kanaka Durga Temple | On Indrakeeladri hill at the entrance to the city, beside the Krishna. The Dasara festival is celebrated on a large scale and draws many pilgrims, so expect crowds and traffic changes then. |
| Prakasam Barrage | The long barrage across the river, popular for evening views and the river-bank walk. |
| Bhavani Island | A river island reached by boat. Boat operation depends on river levels and operator timings, so check before you plan around it. |
| Gandhi Hill | Described by the district site as the first Gandhi memorial in the country with seven stupas, at about 500 ft. The 52 ft stupa was unveiled on 6 October 1968. A library, planetarium and toy train are listed too. |
| Mogalrajapuram Caves | Small rock-cut caves in the heart of the city, at Kasthuribaipet and Mogalrajpuram. A short stop. |
| Rajiv Gandhi Park | A municipal park for a relaxed break with children. |
| St. Mary’s Church, Gunadala | A church on a rocky hill on the east side of the city, about 7 km from the RTC bus stand per the district site. |
| Victoria Jubilee Museum | A city museum of local history and artefacts. Check its opening days. |

Short drives from the city
Undavalli Caves
Ancient rock-cut caves just across the river, around 4–8 km from central Vijayawada depending on where you start. Travel writing mentions their Buddhist origins, and visitors also come to see the large reclining figure of Vishnu inside. A good first stop on the way out of the city.
Mangalagiri
Home to the Panakala Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple, about 10–15 km from Vijayawada on the Guntur road. It is also the first stop of the Pancha Narasimha Kshetrams tour.
Kondapalli
About 16 km from Vijayawada according to the district website. Known for its hill fort and for the traditional wooden toys that the village is famous for. Fort access, toy workshops and their hours vary, so confirm before you go.
Amaravati
Roughly 35–40 km away, with a long history. It is home to the Amareswara temple, one of the five Pancharama Kshetras (see our Pancharama tour), and has Buddhist heritage associated with the town.
Kuchipudi
About 60 km away, according to the district website, the birthplace of Siddhendra Yogi, who originated the classical Kuchipudi dance form. Best for visitors with an interest in dance and culture.

When to go and what to expect
Mornings are the best time for temples and caves, because Vijayawada is hot for much of the year. Winter is the most comfortable season. Dasara is one of the busiest times in the city, with heavy crowds around the main temple and traffic arrangements that can change the route.
Vehicle and fare
A sedan suits up to four on city and nearby day trips, and an SUV or MPV suits larger families. Our vehicle guide compares them, and our local cabs page describes the city service. We do not publish a fixed fare: it depends on the vehicle, hours, kilometres and stops. Send us the places you want and we will quote for them.
