One-Way vs Round-Trip Taxi: How the Two Booking Types Differ

The cheaper option depends on your plan, not on the label. This guide explains both booking types, the terms operators use, and how to read a quote so there are no surprises at the end of the trip.

What the two booking types mean

A one-way taxi takes you from A to B and ends there. A round-trip taxi takes you from A to B, stays with you for an agreed period, and brings you back to A. The difference is not just the distance; it is what the car and driver are doing in between and afterwards.

Neither is automatically cheaper. A one-way drop can be good value when you need only a single journey, but a round trip can work out better when you need the car for several days or are returning quickly.

The terms you will hear

Dead kilometres

Dead kilometres are the distance the driver covers without a passenger, usually the empty drive back after a one-way drop. Operators account for this differently. Some build it into the one-way fare, some price one-way trips from a minimum kilometre figure, and some charge less for routes where they expect a return booking. This is why one-way prices can look very different across operators.

Return travel

On a round trip, the return journey is part of the booking. Fares are usually based on the total kilometres across all days, often with a minimum daily distance, plus a driver allowance for each day.

Waiting charges

If the car waits while you attend a meeting, a temple visit or a shopping stop, operators commonly allow a free waiting period and then charge by the hour. Ask what the free period is and what the hourly rate is.

Night halt and driver allowance

When the driver stays overnight at your destination, a night-halt allowance may apply in addition to daily driver allowance. Ask whether these are included.

Which suits which plan

  • Airport or relocation drop: usually one-way.
  • Same-day visit and return: a round trip, but note that a Vijayawada to Hyderabad day return means about 550 km of driving, which is a long day.
  • Weekend away: a round trip, since you need local travel and a return.
  • Return by train or flight: one-way, since the car is not needed back.
  • Several stops over multiple days: a round trip, quoted on your itinerary.
Do not assume one-way is cheaper

A one-way quote that includes dead kilometres can be higher per kilometre than a round-trip quote. Compare totals for your actual plan, on identical inclusions.

What a clear quote states

Whatever you book, ask for the following to be written down, for example in a WhatsApp message, before you pay anything:

  • Route, pickup and drop points, and number of days
  • Vehicle type and number of passengers allowed
  • Total fare and what it includes: toll, driver allowance, parking, night halt
  • Kilometre limit, if any, and the rate beyond it
  • Waiting charges, including the free period
  • Inter-state permit or entry charges, if the route crosses a border
  • What is excluded, such as accommodation, meals and entry tickets

Our main website shows indicative one-way and round-trip figures for the Hyderabad route in the tariff section, with the note that the final quote is confirmed on WhatsApp. Treat those as a starting point and request a fare for your own date. For a route example, read our Hyderabad taxi guide and the Bangalore guide, where the difference between booking types is larger.

Frequently asked questions

Is a one-way taxi always cheaper than a round trip?

No. It depends on how the operator accounts for the empty return and on your plan. Compare both on the same inclusions.

What are dead kilometres?

The kilometres a driver covers with no passenger, typically on the way back after a one-way drop.

Will I be charged for waiting?

Commonly, after a free period. Ask for the free period and the hourly rate before you confirm.

Can I change from one-way to round trip later?

Sometimes, depending on availability. Tell the operator as early as possible and ask for a revised quote.
