The pilgrimage and why a private car helps
Sabarimala, in Pathanamthitta district of Kerala, is the hill shrine of Lord Ayyappa. Devotees traditionally prepare with a period of vratham, carry an irumudi and climb to the sanctum through the sacred eighteen steps. For many families from Vijayawada the hardest part is not the climb but the journey: roughly a thousand kilometres through three states.
A private car lets a family or a group of fellow devotees travel together on their own schedule, carry the irumudi and luggage without juggling connections, and plan halts to suit older members. It does not change the rules at the other end. Access to Pamba and the temple is governed by the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB), Kerala authorities and the police, and those arrangements change from season to season.
Vijayawada to Sabarimala: distance and travel time
This is a long-distance road trip. Public route planners put the road distance from Vijayawada to the Sabarimala area at roughly 1,080–1,120 km, and a continuous drive at about 20 to 21 hours before any stops. Treat those figures as estimates: the actual distance depends on the route chosen, your exact destination (Nilakkal, Pamba or an Erumely-side halt), traffic, road works and weather.
In practice nobody should drive this in one go. A realistic plan splits the outward journey over two days with a night halt, and does the same on the way back. Including time at Pamba and the temple, many groups plan five to seven days door to door, but your darshan slot and rest needs should set the number, not a formula.
Route from Vijayawada to Sabarimala
The journey usually heads south from Vijayawada on NH16 through Ongole and Nellore, then continues through Tamil Nadu before entering Kerala. From Tamil Nadu there are broad choices: one corridor reaches Kerala by the Coimbatore–Palakkad side and then runs towards Kottayam, Erumely or the Pathanamthitta side, while another uses the Madurai region and enters Kerala through Kumily and Vandiperiyar. Which is faster or better depends on current road conditions, festival traffic and where you plan to halt, so your driver should confirm it on live navigation before departure.
Nilakkal, Pamba and the private-vehicle rules
Many travellers assume the car goes to the temple. It does not. News reports and court proceedings in recent years describe private vehicles being stopped at Nilakkal, the base camp roughly 18–22 km before Pamba, with pilgrims continuing by the KSRTC Nilakkal–Pamba chain bus service. Court orders have also referred to arrangements for dropping pilgrims at Pamba and then returning vehicles to Nilakkal, and to parking grounds at Nilakkal that can fill up during peak days. From Pamba the final approach to the Sannidhanam is on foot (commonly cited as around 4–5 km uphill).
These arrangements can change each season. Do not rely on this page or on any operator for the current position; check the official sources listed at the end and ask the police or Devaswom helpdesks on arrival.
Vijayawada to Sabarimala taxi and car rental options
Which vehicle suits you depends on the group, the luggage and the number of days on the road. Availability depends on your dates, so please confirm when you enquire.
| Vehicle | Suits | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Sedan | Up to four people, light luggage | Boot space fills quickly with irumudi bags, bedding and suitcases |
| SUV or MPV (Ertiga, Innova class) | Families or groups of five to seven | More legroom for a multi-day drive; use the next size up if luggage is heavy |
| Tempo traveller or larger | Larger groups of devotees, where available | Confirm seat count, luggage space and the legal passenger capacity |
What to confirm before you book
- Vehicle type and exact passenger capacity
- Total kilometres and how the fare is calculated
- One-way or round trip, and whether the car waits for you in Kerala (see our guide to one-way versus round-trip taxis)
- Driver allowance, tolls, parking and any state taxes or permit charges for Tamil Nadu and Kerala
- Waiting-time rules and additional-day charges, important because darshan queues can run long
- Pickup and drop arrangements in Vijayawada and your planned halts
Sabarimala taxi fare from Vijayawada
We do not publish a fixed fare for this trip, because the total depends on too many things: the vehicle, your dates, the number of travel days, the route, one-way or round-trip booking, tolls, parking, applicable taxes and permits, and waiting time. A figure quoted without those details would mislead you.
Send us your dates, group size and luggage, and we will reply with a quotation for your trip. Compare any offer, ours or another operator’s, only on identical inclusions.

Sabarimala tour package planning
- Pickup from Vijayawada: agree an early start and a precise pickup point. Day one is the longest.
- Travelling together: groups of fellow devotees often share a larger vehicle. Count the irumudi and luggage as well as people.
- Overnight halts: plan where you will sleep each night in advance, particularly in Kerala during the season, when rooms near Pathanamthitta, Erumely and Kottayam fill early.
- Return journey: decide whether you will start back the same day as darshan or rest first. Tell your operator, because waiting time and driver rest affect the quote.
- Vehicle by group size: use the table above and ask for a larger vehicle rather than squeezing in.
- Book early: the Mandalam–Makaravilakku season is the busiest period for both pilgrims and drivers.
A taxi booking covers the vehicle and driver as described in your quotation. It does not automatically include temple arrangements, accommodation, prasadam, darshan tickets, virtual-queue bookings or any other pilgrimage services.
Important Sabarimala travel rules to verify
The general advice in this guide is stable. The rules below are not: they have been revised repeatedly, and reports from recent seasons differ on details such as daily caps and spot booking. Verify each with official sources before you finalise dates and a vehicle.
- Opening dates and season schedule. The temple is not open every day. Check the official calendar.
- Virtual queue and entry. The TDB’s official booking portal is sabarimalaonline.org. Bookings have been free, and the Board has warned against third-party sites and agents. Whether a booking is mandatory, and whether on-the-spot booking is offered at points such as Nilakkal or Pamba, has differed between seasons.
- Vehicle restrictions and parking. Check where private vehicles must stop, parking arrangements at Nilakkal, and the Nilakkal–Pamba bus arrangements.
- Identification and confirmations. Carry photo ID for every traveller and a printout or screenshot of your booking.
- Pilgrimage practices and instructions. Follow the official guidance on vratham, the irumudi, the trek and the temple. Practices are for you and the temple authorities, not for a taxi operator to advise on.
- Weather, roads and advisories. Heavy rain, landslips and traffic holds on the hill roads can change plans. Check current Kerala travel advisories before departure and en route.
Best time to plan the trip
The main pilgrimage is the Mandalam–Makaravilakku season, running from about mid-November into January, with Makaravilakku in mid-January the most crowded day. The temple also opens for shorter periods during other months, typically for a few days at the start of each Malayalam month and for specific festivals. It is not open every day of the year.
Confirm the official opening schedule first, then reserve the vehicle. Peak days bring larger crowds, longer queues and heavier traffic on the approach roads, so a quieter opening period may suit older travellers better.
Travel tips for Ayyappa devotees
- Leave enough time. Rushing a 1,000 km road trip is the most common mistake.
- Carry essential medicines, a basic first-aid kit and personal items, and keep them in the cabin, not the boot.
- Stay hydrated and take a proper break every two to three hours.
- Confirm accommodation and onward transport (including the Nilakkal–Pamba leg) in advance.
- Follow official trekking and temple instructions at all times.
- Do not push a tired driver. Ask how driver rest is handled on a multi-day trip.
- Keep emergency contacts, booking details and ID where everyone can reach them.
