Choose the vehicle by people and luggage together
The most common planning mistake is counting seats and ignoring bags. A seven-seat vehicle with seven adults and suitcases is uncomfortable on a long drive, because the rear row and boot compete for the same space. A better rule is to choose one size larger than the seat count when you have luggage or when the trip is long.
| Group | Typical fit | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 4 people | Sedan | Fine for light luggage. Large suitcases fill the boot quickly. |
| 5–6 people | SUV or MPV | More legroom and boot space; the usual family choice. |
| 7 people | MPV, with limited luggage | Comfortable only if bags are few; otherwise consider a larger vehicle. |
| 8–12 or more | Tempo traveller | Confirm seat count and luggage arrangement for your trip. |
These are general guides, not guarantees, and availability depends on your dates. Our vehicle comparison goes through each type in more detail.
Plan breaks before you leave
Stopping every two to three hours for 15–20 minutes is a good default on a long family drive. It reduces fatigue for the driver and restlessness for children, and gives everyone a chance to eat and stretch. Decide on likely stops in advance, because last-minute choices tend to be poor roadside options. If someone gets travel sick, plan a lighter meal before departure and keep a few bags handy.
Travelling with children
- Seat belts and seating. Use seat belts for everyone. Child seats are not normally standard in taxis, so if you need one, ask in advance whether it can be arranged or bring your own.
- Keep essentials within reach. Water, snacks, wipes, spare clothes and any medicines should be in a bag inside the cabin, not in the boot.
- Keep the day realistic. Children tolerate long drives better when the schedule includes proper meal stops and some activity at the destination.
Travelling with senior family members
- Pick easy-entry seating. Some vehicles are easier to board than others. Mention mobility needs when you request a quote.
- Shorten daily distances. A comfortable day for an older passenger is often shorter than the one a younger group would plan.
- Carry medicines and keep them accessible, along with a list of any conditions and a contact number.
- Choose accommodation with minimal stairs where possible, and avoid very early starts if they disrupt rest.
Planning a multi-day trip
A multi-day itinerary needs slack. As a starting rule, plan a modest daily driving distance, build in a buffer day or at least a flexible afternoon, and avoid fixed bookings that depend on perfect timing. Check whether the route crosses a state border, because inter-state charges may apply. For pilgrimage trips, remember that queues can run far longer than expected. Our guides to Tirupati and Araku show how this planning works for two very different trips.
Ask how kilometres are counted per day and what happens when you exceed them. The one-way versus round-trip guide explains the terms.
How to request a customised itinerary
Tell us your travel dates, number of adults, children and seniors, the places you hope to visit, the amount of luggage and how many hours a day you are comfortable in the car. We will respond with a suggested plan and a fare for your trip. A suggested itinerary is a plan for discussion; it is not a fixed package until the details and inclusions are agreed with you.

Frequently asked questions
Which vehicle is best for a family of five?
Most families of five choose an SUV or MPV for the extra legroom and luggage space, especially on longer trips.
How often should we stop?
Roughly every two to three hours for a short break is a sensible starting point.
Can you arrange a child seat?
Ask when you request your quote. Availability depends on the vehicle and date, so it is best to confirm early.
Is a suggested itinerary a confirmed package?
No. It becomes a booking only after you and the operator agree the dates, vehicle, inclusions and fare.
