Choosing the Right Outstation Taxi: Sedan, Hatchback, MPV, SUV or Tempo Traveller

Seat count is only part of the answer. Luggage, distance, road type and how long everyone will sit in the car all matter. Use this guide to match the vehicle to the trip.

The vehicle types compared

The vehicle categories listed on our main website include hatchbacks, sedans such as Dzire and Etios, SUVs and MPVs such as Ertiga, Innova and Innova Crysta, and tempo travellers. Which one is free depends on your date, so confirm availability when you ask for a fare. The comparison below is a general guide.

TypePassengersLuggageGood for
HatchbackUp to 3 comfortablySmallSolo travellers, couples, short trips
SedanUp to 4Moderate bootSmall families, business trips
MPV or SUV (Ertiga, Innova)5–7More room, less when all seats are usedFamilies, long journeys, pilgrimage trips
Tempo traveller10–12 or more, by modelDepends on layoutLarge families, groups, corporate outings

“MPV” and “SUV” are often used interchangeably in everyday booking. Ertiga and Innova are technically multi-purpose vehicles, but many operators list them as SUVs. What matters is seat count, boot space and ride comfort, not the label.

Passengers and luggage: count both

Seat count tells you who can sit. Luggage tells you whether they will be comfortable. A useful habit is to list the bags you will carry, including large suitcases, and ask whether they fit with all passengers on board. If the third row of an MPV is used, boot space shrinks considerably, and some luggage may need to go in the cabin or on a roof carrier if available. For family-specific planning, see our family trip guide.

Comfort on a long journey

  • Hours in the car matter. A sedan that feels fine for a two-hour transfer can feel cramped over eight hours.
  • Seat support and legroom. Taller passengers and older relatives often prefer MPVs or SUVs.
  • Air conditioning. Ask whether rear passengers get adequate cooling on a hot day.
  • Road type. Highway runs suit most vehicles. For hill or ghat roads, as on the way to Araku or Srisailam, driver experience matters as much as the vehicle.

Comparing fares fairly

Larger vehicles usually cost more per kilometre, but the cheapest quote is not always the best value. Compare like with like: same route, same days, same inclusions. A lower headline fare that excludes toll, driver allowance or night halt may end up costing more than a higher fare that includes them. The indicative figures in our homepage tariff are shown by vehicle type so you can see how pricing generally scales, and the final quote is confirmed for your date. Our one-way versus round-trip guide explains how the booking type changes the maths.

Questions to ask before you confirm

  1. Which exact vehicle model will I get, and can I have the number and driver details beforehand?
  2. Will all passengers and all luggage fit comfortably?
  3. Is toll included? Driver allowance? Parking? Night halt?
  4. What is the kilometre limit and the rate beyond it?
  5. How are waiting time and extra stops charged?
  6. Are there any inter-state permit or entry charges on my route?
  7. What is the cancellation or change policy?
  8. Is the driver experienced on my route, especially if it includes hill roads?
  9. How will I reach the driver on the day, and how will pickup be coordinated?
  10. Can I get the fare and inclusions in writing, for example on WhatsApp?

Frequently asked questions

Is a sedan enough for a long outstation trip?

For up to three or four passengers with modest luggage, usually yes. For larger parties or heavy luggage, an MPV or SUV is more comfortable.

What is the difference between an MPV and an SUV?

In everyday booking they are often grouped. Focus on seats, boot space and ride comfort rather than the label.

When do I need a tempo traveller?

Typically for groups of eight or more. Confirm the seat count and luggage space for your model.

Can I choose the exact car?

You can ask for a vehicle type. Specific models depend on availability, so confirm when you request your quote.
