Route and realistic timing
The usual road is NH16 along the coast, passing the Guntur and Prakasam districts, then Ongole and Nellore before crossing into Tamil Nadu shortly before Chennai. Public sources put the distance at roughly 445–455 km. Map apps often show about six and a half hours, but with meal stops, toll plazas and Chennai’s city traffic, seven to eight hours is a safer figure to plan around.
That makes Chennai a full-day drive. If you have a fixed arrival time, such as a flight or meeting, treat the estimate as a minimum and add margin.
Planning the day: departure and rest stops
- Leave early. A start between 5 and 6 am usually puts you in Chennai by early afternoon and avoids driving the final stretch in the evening rush.
- Break the drive. Plan a stop around the midpoint, near Ongole or Nellore, for a meal and a proper rest rather than a quick fuel stop.
- Keep the city leg in mind. Chennai’s approach roads can be slow at peak hours, so the last 30 km can take as long as a much longer highway section.
- Avoid overnight pushes. Driving through the night for a morning arrival increases fatigue risk. If you must travel overnight, ask how driver rest is handled.
One-way or round trip to Chennai?
A one-way drop makes sense if you are travelling only to Chennai, for example to catch a flight or start a job. A round trip suits a visit of a few days where you want the same car. With a distance this long, the trade-offs are bigger, for example how the return kilometres are counted and how many days the car is kept. Our guide to one-way and round-trip bookings explains the terms. The key point is to compare quotes on identical inclusions, not just on headline price.
Vehicle comfort over 450 km
Comfort matters more here than on a short transfer. A sedan is fine for one to three passengers with modest luggage. For families or anyone who wants room to stretch out, an SUV or MPV is more relaxed over seven or eight hours. Check that the air conditioning works well, and that the rear seats suit all the passengers who will occupy them. More on this is in our vehicle guide.
Fare inclusions and exclusions
On a route that crosses a state border, small items add up, so ask for them to be named in the quote:
| Item | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Toll (FASTag) | Is toll included, or charged at actuals? |
| Inter-state permit or entry charges | Do any apply when entering Tamil Nadu, and who pays? |
| Driver allowance | Is it included in the fare? |
| Parking and city entry | Included, or extra at drop-off? |
| Waiting time | How long is free, and what is the hourly charge after? |
| Extra stops | Are detours counted in the kilometres? |
Arrival in Chennai
Give your drop location precisely: Chennai is large, and a central address, an airport and a suburb are very different journeys. If you need an airport drop or pickup as part of the booking, check that it can be arranged for your date. If you need a GST invoice for business travel, ask for it when you book rather than afterwards.

Frequently asked questions
How far is Chennai from Vijayawada by road?

How long does the drive take?
Seven to eight hours is a realistic plan once you include rest stops and Chennai traffic, even though map apps may show less.
Can the taxi wait for me in Chennai?
That depends on the booking type and how long. Waiting time is normally charged, so agree the rate before you travel.
